Pupil Mental Health and Wellbeing

"Pupils learn how to look after themselves physically and mentally. They enjoy the weekly well-being sessions. Pupils enjoy reading and relaxing in the recently opened forest themed library." Ofsted Nov 2022

At Staples Road Primary, we are committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our pupils and staff. We know that everyone experiences life challenges that can make us vulnerable and at times, anyone may need additional support. We take the view that positive mental health is everybody’s business and that we all have a role to play. Our Mental Health Lead is Mrs Davis.

At our school we:

  • help children to understand their emotions and feelings better through being a TPP school and using Zones of Regulation effectively
  • help children feel comfortable sharing any concerns or worries
  • help children socially to form and maintain relationships
  • promote self esteem and ensure children know that they count
  • encourage children to be confident and ‘dare to be different’ by promoting diversity and being inclusive
  • help children to develop emotional resilience and to manage setbacks through growth mindset

We offer different levels of support:

Universal Support- To meet the needs of all our pupils  through our overall ethos and our wider curriculum. For instance our values, the promotion of growth mindset and zones of regulation. We also provide wellbeing sessions for all children through Mindful MovementStretch and Sing and Forest Bathing.

Additional support- For those who may have short term needs and those who may have been made vulnerable by life experiences such as bereavement.  We have our wellbeing mentor and the wellbeing team to action this.

Targeted support-  For pupils who need more differentiated support and resources or specific targeted interventions such as regular intervention groups or 1-1 support from our art and play therapist and our therapy dog.
